What Is The Difference Between The Mla And Apa Term Paper Writing Formats

If a term paper needs to be written, you will have to decide on what specific writing format to follow. There are two of them: MLA style (suggested by the Modern Language Association) and APA style (worked out by the American Psychological Association). While MLA style is typically used in humanities, APA style was mostly designed for social sciences. Therefore, there are some differences you must know about:

  1. Paper formatting.
  2. An MLA formatted paper consists only of the body of the paper and a works cited page. However, in the case of APA format, divide your paper into four parts: title page, abstract, main body, and references.

  3. Title page.
  4. An MLA formatted paper doesn’t have a separate title page. Write a title, have double spacing, and write the essay on the same page. Underline the MLA formatted title; capitalize all the major words in it. Use a header on the left side of the first page; where the author’s name, instructor’s name, course, and date should be mentioned. There are also headers on the right sides of the remaining pages, stating the author’s last name and page number.

A title page in an APA formatted paper is found on a separate page flushed left, while the page numbers are flushed right. Place the title, author’s name, and institutional affiliation on the title page. Write the APA formatted title in italics; capitalize only the first word of a title and of a subtitle. The headers are used at the top of all the pages, including the title page.

  5. Date.
  6. In an MLA formatted paper, write the date immediately after the publisher in the citation without parenthesis, while when using the APA format, the date should follow the author in parenthesis.

  7. Author’s name.
  8. In MLA format, spell out the author’s full name. In APA style, only spell out the last name of the author; use initials instead of the first name.

  9. Sources.
  10. The sources cited in an MLA formatted paper are found on the last page, entitled “Works Cited.” The same page with the sources in an APA formatted paper is entitled “References.”

  11. In-text citations.
  12. If information is cited in MLA format, place the author’s last name and the page number at the end. Do not use the abbreviations “p.” or “pp.” for a mentioned page. However, if there is an in-text citation in an APA formatted paper, write the author’s last name and the year the material was published. In case a page number is placed, use “p.” or “pp.” to mark it.
