Basic Instructions On How To Write A Research Paper References Page

Writing references is tedious and boring work, but it has to be done, and it has to be done well because they mean easy marks for you. Sometimes you can get conflicting tips and advice about how to go about writing references for research papers, but here are the most basic instructions. Follow these, and you can’t go wrong!

  • Look at examples
  • There are plenty of examples out there of citations for all sorts of academic texts. This is the first place to go. Try a Google search or a Google Scholar search for academic research papers and look through until you find an example that looks professional and that you can take inspiration from. It is easier to understand what is expected of you if you can see it in front of you, rather than just have a bunch of instructions, either from online or from your tutor or the course. Remember to get a lot of different examples to see which one looks the best and is the easiest to understand, since citations need to be clear and easy to follow, even for seasoned professionals such as your tutor.

  • Take down citations as you go
  • As you are writing your research paper, you will be making references to the things you have read. You need to be writing down all the relevant information – name, date, name of the publication, etc. as you go. This will make it easier for you to remember it all when it comes to actually creating your bibliography and saves you the stress of rushing around trying to find everything you read over the course of writing your paper.

  • Decide on a clear style
  • Some tutors specify what style they want their references in, but often it is up to you to decide the best way to present your citations. If you are expected to do it in a certain style, make sure you follow the instructions exactly. If not, make sure that the style you choose for yourself is clear and consistent: you cannot put your references in one order for one publication and another order for another. Also, remember that articles need to be cited in a different way from, for instance, books or website addresses. Take your time and remember to proofread your references page just like you will proofread and check the rest of the research paper.
