Tips On How To Write A Research Paper In The MLA Format

Here is a highlight of some basic tips on how to write a research paper in the MLA format.

The first tip on how to write a paper in the MLA format is to understand the general document setting. The paper should have 1 inch margins, and the fonts should be double spaced, while the font size should be 12-point too.

Page numbers should begin on and with the first page, and you should type your name next to the page number so that it will appear on every page on the top right corner.

You should also type you name, the name of your instructor, the subject and date of submission on the flush left side of the first page.

Additionally, all titles should be centred and written in 12-point, Times New Roman font, and the title should never be bolded, italicized or underlined.

In-text Citations

One of the most important tips on how to write a research paper in the MLA format is concerned with citing the sources used. As a general rule, all citations should include the surname of the author and the page number.

Do not separate the author’s name and the page number with a comma. Periods and commas should go outside of inline quotes.

You are also required to use footnotes to explain a point that doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the paragraph.

The footnotes should also be inserted directly after the clause or phrase to which it refers. You should remember that footnotes are also supposed to be double spaced and in size 12 Times New Roman fonts. In case you delete some words from the original quote, you should insert an ellipsis, three periods with a space between as well as after each period. All titles of published works such as journals, books and films should be italicized and not underlined.

Works Cited List

Another useful tip on how to write a research paper in the MLA format is concerned with the works cited page or list. All entries in the works cited list should be sorted alphabetically. The works cited page should begin on a new page and the title “works cited” should be centred without any underlining, bolding or italicizing.
